1. History Sagrantino di Montefalco is one of Umbria’s most distinctive and prestigious wines. Made entirely from the Sagrantino grape, which is indigenous to the region, this bold and powerful wine has a storied history that dates back centuries. Once used primarily for sweet, passito-style wines, Sagrantino’s potential as a dry red was realized more recently. In 1992, Sagrantino di Montefalco was awarded DOCG status, solidifying its reputation as one of Italy’s elite red wines. The unique terroir of Montefalco—marked by rolling hills, limestone-rich soils, and a warm, Mediterranean climate—produces a wine that is intensely tannic, deeply colored, and packed with concentrated dark fruit, spice, and earthy notes. With aging, it evolves into a more complex, harmonious wine that reflects Umbria’s rich winemaking tradition.

2. Pairing Sagrantino di Montefalco’s robust structure, firm tannins, and intense flavor profile make it ideal for pairing with equally bold, richly flavored dishes.

  • Braised Short Ribs or Lamb Shanks: The wine’s powerful tannins and dark fruit enhance the richness of slow-cooked, savory meats.

  • Grilled Bistecca alla Fiorentina: Its earthy and spicy undertones complement the smoky, charred crust and juicy, rare beef.

  • Wild Boar Ragù over Pappardelle: The hearty, gamey sauce finds a perfect match in Sagrantino’s dark berry notes and firm structure.

  • Aged Pecorino di Norcia: The wine’s intensity balances the salty, nutty complexity of this local Umbrian cheese.

  • Truffle Dishes: Whether it’s truffle-infused risotto or truffle-topped pasta, Sagrantino’s earthy character and vibrant acidity elevate the luxurious flavors of truffles.

3. The Top Wineries

  • Arnaldo Caprai: A pioneering producer known for refining and modernizing Sagrantino production, Caprai sets the standard for quality and consistency.

  • Perticaia: Focused on traditional methods and a commitment to excellence, Perticaia produces Sagrantino di Montefalco that highlights the grape’s natural power and elegance.

  • Scacciadiavoli: A historic estate with roots in the 19th century, Scacciadiavoli crafts Sagrantino wines that reflect the authenticity and character of Montefalco’s terroir.

4. The Notes of Master Chef Gianluca Deiana Abis

Sagrantino di Montefalco is a wine that I hold in high regard for its unmatched power and depth. It’s not for the faint of heart; this is a wine that commands attention and deserves to be savored alongside equally robust dishes. I appreciate how Sagrantino showcases Umbria’s unique identity—its earthy, rugged charm balanced with refined craftsmanship. It’s a wine that can age gracefully, revealing layers of complexity over time. For me, Sagrantino di Montefalco is a true statement wine, a reminder that Italy’s diversity extends far beyond the usual suspects, offering something bold, unique, and unforgettable.
